BORODIAKA, Ukraine (AP) — In the rubble of war, art blooms.
A beautiful painting of a gymnast standing upside down has suddenly appeared on the wall of a destroyed building outside Kyiv, which appears to be the work of British graffiti artist Banksy.
Posted by Banksy Photo on his Instagram page Borodyanka, northwest of the Ukrainian capital.
The town was the target of shelling and fighting in the early days of the Russian invasion, turning apartment blocks into Charred, blown up hulk.
The gymnast’s mural is in black and white, so she looks like she’s doing a handstand on the crumpled remains of a concrete block sticking out from the blackened wall. Towering above her are the run-down guts of what was once an apartment.
Another mural in town – a young boy throwing judo at a man – also looks like it might be Banksy’s, although it wasn’t posted on his Instagram page.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is a judo practitioner.
A Banksy-like painting, also in black and white, which Banks himself has not confirmed as his, also appeared on the wall of a war-damaged building in the town of Irpin, a northwestern suburb of Kyiv.
It shows a rhythmic gymnast doing a spin with a ribbon on a large hole in the wall.
