A bomb exploded on a popular pedestrian street in Istanbul on Sunday, killing six people and wounding dozens more.

Videos posted online showed ambulances, fire engines and police at the scene on Istiklal Avenue, a typically crowded avenue popular with tourists and locals lined with shops and restaurants.

In one video, a loud bang can be heard, flames can be seen, and pedestrians turn and flee. Social media users said the stores were closed and the boulevard was closed.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the blast a “treacherous attack” and said its perpetrators would be punished.

In addition to the six dead, Erdogan said 53 people were injured, according to information he received from the governor of Istanbul.

Turkey was hit by a series of deadly bombings between 2015 and 2017 by the so-called Islamic State group and the outlawed Kurdish group.

Five prosecutors were assigned to investigate the bombing, state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Turkey’s media watchdog has imposed temporary restrictions on coverage of the bombings – a move that bans the use of close-up videos and photos of the blasts and their aftermath.

The Supreme Council of Radio and Television has imposed similar bans in the past following attacks and accidents.
