Organized by the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi), the show returns with its largest and most diverse lineup to date. This year’s edition will feature 33 new galleries from Colombia, France, Tunisia, Italy, Nigeria, Korea, Italy, Morocco, Turkey, UAE and more, as well as a rich, curated experience of the fair’s program.

Art Abu Dhabi welcomed respected art historian Rachida Triki, gallerist Jade YeÅŸim Turanlı and art journalist Riccarda Mandrini this year as guest curators and collaborators for the fair’s galleries. Dr. Omar Kholeif will curate My Life in the Metaverse as part of the Abu Dhabi Art Gateway programme, with the Heritage Artists Council planning new work by Abdullah Al Saadi, Marinella Senatore, Shilpa Gupta and Conrad Shawcross. As part of the year-round program Beyond: Emerging Artists, three emerging UAE artists, Majd Alloush, Sarah Al Mehairi and Mohamed Khalid, have created new commissions to be exhibited at the fair.
Abu Dhabi Art will also host CookBook Abu Dhabi, an exceptional culinary arts experience featuring renowned chefs Kasper Kurdahl, Maksut Askar, Ivan Brehm and Sahar Parham Al Awadhi, as well as artists Caique Tizzi, Greta Alfaro, Hicham Berrada and Emeka Ogbah.

Highlights of Art Abu Dhabi 2022 include:

Spotlight: A New Tomorrow: Art historian, philosophy professor and curator Triki is the guest curator for this year’s Spotlight section on New Tomorrow. This section will highlight galleries and artists from North Africa and explore the evolution of art in the region. Abu Dhabi Art also appointed gallerist Turanlı of Pi Artworks and journalist Mandrini as guest curators of the fair, each bringing some new galleries. Turanlı will focus on Turkish galleries and artists, including first-time exhibitors Dirimart and Galeri Nev Ä°stanbul, while Mandrini will bring together galleries from around the world and different projects, including Mazzoleni, P420 and Dep Art Gallery.

Gateway: Author, curator, broadcaster and cultural historian Dr. Omar Kholeif has curated My Life in the Metaverse, the fair’s 2022 Gateway exhibit, which will be on view from 16 November 2022 to 22 January 2023 at Manarat Al Saadiyat on display. My Life in the Metaverse is an interdisciplinary exhibition spanning multiple media including sculpture, painting, photography, installation, video, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), on a simulated tour guided by Dr. Kholeif’s alter ego, O. My Life in the Metaverse showcases the work of internationally renowned artists, many of whom will present new commissions, as well as those that have never been exhibited in the UAE before. Artists include Sophia Al Maria, Cory Arcangel, Cream Projects, Simon Denny, Celia Hempton, Paul Heyer, Haroon Mirza, Farhad Moshiri, Trevor Paglen, Nam June Paik, Heather Phillipson and Andy Warhol.
Beyond: Emerging Artists: Three emerging UAE artists, Majd Alloush, Sarah Al Mehairi and Mohamed Khalid, have created new commissions to be exhibited at the art fair in November. Each artist explores concepts of borders, homeland, man-made territories, and geographic mapping with their unique perspective.

Heritage Artist Commissions: As part of this year’s Heritage Artist Commissions programme, Abu Dhabi Arts Center has commissioned four artists to create new public installations to be placed at historically significant sites across the emirate. Commissions for 2022 include new work by Abdullah Alsadi, Marinella Senator, Shilpa Gupta and Conrad Shawcross. The works will be featured in Al Ain and Al Hosn, as well as Manarat Al Saadiyat, the house of art in Abu Dhabi. The installations will be on display to the public on November 16, the first day of the fair, and will remain on display until January 22, 2023. The pieces are site-specific, thoughtfully placed in dialogue with their surroundings, bridging the gap between history and modernity.
In & Around: This year, seven renowned artists will exhibit their work in the In and Around program: Shaikha Al Mazrou, Lawrie Shabibi; Ngozi-Omeje Ezema, Ko; Abdullah Saadi; Marinella Senatore, Mazo Lenny; Conrad Shawcross, His Gallery; Farah Al Qasimi, Third Line; Slime Camel, Rand; Farid Belkahia, Blue Violin. They will be joined by three art students participating in the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Awards.
Farideh Lashai: Floating on the Waves: Abu Dhabi Art Gallery presents an exhibition presenting the concluding work of the late Farideh Lashai (1944-2014), acclaimed Iranian artist, through six video installations. These works feed into her artistic life: as an abstract painter, playful experimenter of new technologies and intellectual, adept at bringing her aesthetic gifts closer to her role as writer, thinker and translator.
Farideh Lashai: Floating on the ups and downs presents a seamless balance between her conceptual and historical thinking and the ever-present beauty of color and brushwork to narrate the political conditions of Farideh’s time and beyond. The videos follow the main character, a playful animated rabbit, through different eras and landscapes, bringing lightness and innocence to these complicated times. Farideh also pays homage to Charlie Chaplin and Umm-Kulthum in the video installation El Amal (Desire) at the entrance of the showroom, and her work accompanies the artist’s Persian bestseller The Jackal Came, an English translation of which is forthcoming.

The exhibition is curated by Saam Samiee in collaboration with Photography Studio, Manarat Al Saadiyat, Farideh Lashai Foundation, Basel, Switzerland and Leila Heller Gallery. The exhibition is made possible thanks to the generous loans of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Khalifa and the Mohammad Afhami Collection, Maryam Massoudi, Farhad Bakhtiar Bakhtiari, Mana Jalalian and Farideh Lashai estates .
Art Abu Dhabi: View the winning student designs for the Art Abu Dhabi Pavilion at the fair’s entrance.
Are We Microcosm?: A showcase of art and technology led by The MORROW Collective and supported by FBMI.
The Christo and Jeanne-Claude Awards: The 10th edition of the winning entries will be exhibited at Art Abu Dhabi this year.
Educational Program: Abu Dhabi Art offers stimulating art workshops, artist-led master classes, tours in English and Arabic, and competitions for all ages. There is a strong emphasis on public engagement for this year’s various programs and events, including lectures, performances, workshops and tours, organized at Manarat Al Saadiyat as well as the site of this year’s committee, some led by artists and curators. Tours need to be booked in advance.
Program of Talks: Daily in-depth discussions moderated by arts and culture experts around the following topics: Creating Museum Collections in the Region, North African Art, Women in the Art World, Digital Art and NFTs, Arts Empowering Society, and Notable People in Art .
