War in Ukraine strongly condemned by most G20 members: draft declaration | World News

[ad_1]

A draft statement by the leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) economies, seen by Reuters on Tuesday, strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed that it was exacerbating the fragility of the global economy.

“There are other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions,” said the draft statement, which was confirmed by a European diplomat.

The 16-page document has yet to be adopted by G20 members.

The summit, which hosts Indonesia and others had said should focus on the global economy, was instead overshadowed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Recognizing that the G20 is not a forum for addressing security issues, we acknowledge that security issues can have a significant impact on the global economy,” the draft declaration said.

Russia’s foreign ministry said on Sunday that the G20 was not the place to discuss security issues but should prioritize world economic challenges, with the meeting expected to be dominated by war.

The draft document also said G20 central banks were monitoring inflationary pressures and adjusting monetary policy accordingly.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged his summit counterparts via video link to step up leadership and stop Russia’s war in Ukraine in line with his proposed peace plan.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, not President Vladimir Putin, was represented at the summit, and Russia said it was conducting a special military operation in Ukraine.
