Beyonce has propelled herself into the top echelon of the Grammys: The star singer has nine nominations, tying her husband, Jay-Z, for the most nominated music performer in the show’s history.
Beyonce’s “Break My Soul” was nominated for Record and Song of the Year, while Renaissance, which ventured into the world of dancehall music, was nominated for Album of the Year.
With Jay-Z also nominated five times this year, the couple now hold the record for most Grammy nominations, with 88 each.
Kendrick Lamar has the second-most nominations with eight nominations. Both Adele and Brandi Carlisle got seven nods. Harry Styles, Mary J Blige, Future, DJ Khaled, The-Dream and mastering engineer Randy Merrill took six each.
Nearly half of this year’s primary nominees — announced by the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, John Legend, Machine Gun Kelly and Smokey Robinson — are women, and more than half are people of color, according to the Recording Academy. .
The awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on February 5.
“It made me very proud, but it made me realize that we have to keep the work we do,” said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr.
The peer-driven voting system has come a long way, and membership has grown, he said, but he remains confident more progress can be made.
“This year, I’m pleased with the results and the work that voters have done,” he continued.
“We have almost 13,000 voters now. It’s a very important job. I’m happy to think they took the time to listen to the music and evaluate.
“I think you can tell from the genre of the nominations that they’re not just targeting pop music or music that has a lot of streaming. It’s just high-quality music.”
The academy has added a special song about social change and five new categories, including songwriter of the year, which Mr Harvey said will further help diversify the 65th annual awards.
The Non-Classical Songwriter category will recognize an individual who is the “most prolific” non-performance and non-production songwriter for a series of new works during the qualifying year.
It will take a different approach than Song of the Year, which rewards a songwriter who writes the lyrics or melody for a song.
Mr Harvey said implementing the songwriter category was an “important” step forward for the music industry. Last year, the rules were updated to allow any songwriter, producer, engineer or featured artist to be nominated among those nominated for Album of the Year.
Beyonce is the most awarded woman in Grammy history, with 28, and if she wins four, she could break the record held by the late Hungarian-British conductor Georg Solti. ) holds the record for winning the most awards.
Solti, who has 31 Grammys, has held that record since 1997.
For the first time in Beyonce’s acclaimed career, she will be nominated in the dance category. Her seventh studio project, Renaissance, won Best Electronic Dance Album, while Break My Soul was nominated for Best Electronic Dance Recording.
Other nominations include Best R&B Song for Cuff It, R&B Performance for Virgo’s Groove, Traditional R&B Performance for Plastic Off The Sofa and Be Alive for Visual Media, the Oscar-nominated Richard King Soundtrack.
Jay-Z’s three nominations came for DJ Khaled’s God Did, which starred Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, John Legend and Fridayy.
The track is up for best rap performance and rap song, as well as song of the year, and Jay-Z was also nominated for his work on Beyonce’s Break My Soul.
The rapper also won Album of the Year for his performance on his wife’s Renaissance album.
