A 7-hour open heart surgery performed on a 10-month-old boy helped treat his complicated congenital malformations.
Mohamed Hazmi weighed only 5 kg at the time of the operation. According to Abu Dhabi Health Services (Seha), the procedure ranks 10th out of 15 levels of complexity of surgery.
The successful operation was performed in Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) under the coordination of the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Health.
Rastelli surgery is a technically challenging open-heart surgery performed during cardiopulmonary bypass.
It is suitable for certain combinations of congenital heart disease. After a complicated operation, the baby boy was successfully extubated (removed the ventilator) in the operating room.

Dr. Zubaida Masoud Alismaili, SKMC’s Acting Deputy Chief Medical Officer, said: “Our medical team consists of 12 doctors and nurses, technical and administrative staff, plus our state-of-the-art technology, helping to make Muhammad’s surgery a success.
“Mohammed is now recovering with excellent hemodynamic results and there is no pulmonary artery stenosis that is common in Rastelli patients. He is not obstructing pulmonary blood flow.”
