Columbus, Georgia (WRBL) — This coming New Years, North Columbus will welcome even more dining and entertainment opportunities. The first phase of the $65 million development is due to be completed in February 2023.
Nestled between US highways. 80 and Georgia 85, Midland Commons is estimated to bring more than 800 jobs to the City of Columbus and generate more than $88 million in revenue. The mixed-use development will include a range of fast food chains, retail businesses, local restaurants and loft apartments. One shining feature, however, is their lifestyle center, which developer Chris Whiteman says is modeled after Uptown Columbus’ Friday night concert series.
“That’s exactly where we got it from. What we hear a lot is people who live in the area, they don’t want to drive downtown. They don’t want to compete with GI. They don’t want to compete with college students and the younger crowd Competition. They want to go out there and have a good meal, go to a concert and go home,” he said.
Midland Commons is also seeking council approval to create a recreation area for the lifestyle center where open containers can be brought in on courtyards and green spaces.
“What we envision is people being able to cross-mortgage each other’s leases there. So, if someone at the Italian restaurant over here wants to fill his glass, we want him to go over there to the bar that we’re going to open, and then Sitting at a bar drinking,” Whiteman added. He hopes it will encourage people to enjoy the courtyard, gather around the fire pit, and stick around for a concert.
Some Columbus residents have expressed concern about chain restaurants and storefronts such as Culver’s, Publix, Dunkin Donuts, AT&T, Advanced Autoparts, etc., which will move into Midland Commons; however, Whiteman said the lifestyle center will offer some local options and eateries.
“We’re talking to an Italian restaurant and a pizza restaurant; we’re in very serious negotiations with them now. I think you’d be very proud of the local talent we’re bringing here,” he said.
At the lifestyle centre, there will also be a sushi restaurant, a bar, another Kilwins branch, and a number of other options. The Lifestyle Center has a suite available for rent.
To give the area a “downtown” feel, there will also be 22 loft-style apartments above the restaurant overlooking the living hub, including one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans.
Retailers set to join Midland Commons outside the lifestyle center include Publix, Great Clips, Their Lash, AT&T, Domino’s, Jersey Mikes, Synovus, Advanced Auto Parts, Culver’s, Dunkin Donuts and Jiffy Lube. There are also storefront suites open for rent.
Likewise, the first phase of the 88-acre development is due to be completed sometime in February 2023. More information can be found at here.
