LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – Known as the “Fox Theatre,” the building opened its doors to 1920s vaudeville in McCook. Today, the theater is used for various events.
We caught up with theater manager Charles Coleman to learn about this McCook landmark.
“The theater was founded in 1926 by Albert Barnett, a prominent McCook businessman,” says Coleman. “In January 1927, it opened. It was basically a vaudeville theater with performances on weekends and Sundays, but soon became a movie theater. It was part of the Nebraska World chain of theaters . And then, not long after, it was leased or owned by the Rocky Mountain Theater Company, which in turn was leased to Fox, which is how it became a Fox Theater.”
Theaters were used early on for live performances, then movies.
“Ray Search was one of the guiding figures who worked with Fox and managed the theater for many years. This continued until the 1970s, when my wife’s parents, John and Eileen Hubert, bought the building and ran the theater. They ran it Until it stopped showing movies in the 1990s. At that point, we decided it needed to go in a different direction and used it for live performances. Actions were taken to put it in a more favorable venue. That’s basically what we do now Yes. We can still make movies, but we can do live performances, the community theater uses it, it’s a great concert hall, we’ve had a number of state meetings here.”

“We have a number of organizations using it,” Coleman said. “We had a fantastic fundraiser here a few years ago with two ladies from Bartley raising money for childhood cancer. It’s nice when we can do something to help people.”
