Christmas Traditions Begin in Fort Wayne | Entertainment

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, there’s definitely a chill in the air, which can only mean that the city’s Christmas traditions are about to begin.

Events include lighting of classic Santa and his reindeer lights during Downtown Lights Night, a gingerbread celebration, zoo fun, reindeer visits, special concerts and ice skating.

Here’s a look at some of what’s happening in the coming weeks.

Christmas on Broadway

This year marks the 18th year that celebrations will be held at Broadway Plaza, Broadway and Park Avenue.

The event kicks off at 5:30 pm today and includes a Broadway parade starting on Clayton Avenue before heading to the park where the Christmas trees will be lit at 6 pm. There will also be fireworks.

The holiday exhibition at the Foellinger-Freimann Institute of Botany opens on Saturday. This year’s theme is “Happy Smallidays,” featuring stories about little mice. Written by Talitha Shipman, this story urges people to see the joy in the little things at Christmas.

The exhibition will run until January 8th. Shipman will be signing books Saturday 2-5pm and December 17th 11am-1pm.

Caribou will be visiting the Greenhouse on December 3rd, 10th and 17th from noon to 4pm.

Extended hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday 10am-5pm; Thursday and Friday Nov. 25-Dec. 23 10am-8pm; Sunday noon-4pm. The Greenhouse is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Years Day.

Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children, and free for children 2 and under. Admission is $1 from 5pm to 8pm every Thursday and Friday from November 25th to December 23rd. Admission is $1 on Wednesdays from 5pm to 8pm during Night of Lights.

The outdoor skating rink at Headwaters Park at 333 S. Clinton St. will open for its 20th season at noon Saturday. Admission is $6 for adults and children 14 and older, and $4 for children 13 and under. Skate rentals are $3.

Fantasy of Lamp

Blue Jacket’s Fantasy of Lights opens Sunday at Frank Park. Drive-Thru Christmas Light Display at 3411 Sherman Blvd. Open daily at 5:30pm starting December 31st. Closed Sunday to Thursday at 9pm and Friday and Saturday at 10pm.

Admission is $10 per private car, $20 per 15-seat van, and $40 per bus or trolley.

The annual light show of the Downtown Christmas Lights begins at 5:45pm on Wednesday at the Historic Center Tower on Barr Street.

Next, Kris Kringle Village will be lit at Arts United Plaza at 5:50 pm, followed by the Nativity of Christ Children’s Day at the west end of Aunt Millie’s Building at 5:55 pm and Aunt Millie’s Lights at 6 pm.

At 6:05 p.m., Santa’s workshop will be lit in the community center.Santa and his reindeer will light up at PNC Bank at 6:20 p.m.

The lights at the Ash Brokerage building will change to festive colors at 6:40pm and at 7pm the Merry Christmas wreaths at the I&M Power Center Plaza and the Flagstar Bank Christmas tree display will be lit. Outdoor presentation at the Foellinger-Freimann Institute of Botany and the Embassy Theater will be revealed at 7:15 p.m.

Downtown churches and the Allen County Public Library will chime at 7:30 p.m., followed by fireworks at Parkview Field at 8 p.m.

festival of trees

The Festival of Trees at the Embassy Theater kicked off Wednesday and runs through Nov. 30, with dozens of trees adorning the theater lobby, 125 W. Jefferson Blvd. and the Indiana Hotel lobby.

Now in its 38th year, the event is a fundraiser for the theater. Open Wed 6pm-9pm, Thurs 3pm-7pm, Nov 25-28 11am-8pm & Nov 29-30 9am-1pm point.

Admission is $10 for adults and children 13 and older, $5 for children 12 and under, and free for children 1 and under.Tickets are available at embassy ticket offices and Ticketmaster.com.

Entertainment at the theater included a screening of the 2018 animated film “The Doctor.” Seuss’ The Grinch, Thursdays at 4 p.m. Local music and dance groups will perform on stage at certain times.

gingerbread festival

The Gingerbread Festival kicks off on November 25 at 302 E. Berry St in the Historic Center. It runs until December 18 and features dozens of gingerbread creations.

Admission includes admission to the entire museum, $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, and free for children 2 and under. Admission to Night of Lights is $3 on Thursdays, 3-9 pm; advance ticket purchase required. Admission is free on November 29th from 5-9 pm; advance ticket purchase required.

Extended Historic Center holiday hours are Monday through Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday and Saturday 9am to 8pm and Sunday noon to 5pm. It’s closed on Thanksgiving.

The Fort Wayne Philharmonic’s Holiday Pops series begins November 29th at 7:30 pm in Warsaw. Other performances in the region are Dec. 11 at the T. Furth Performing Arts Center at Trini University in Angola at 2pm and Dec. 20 at the Honeywell Center in Wabash at 7:30pm.

The group will perform their holiday hits at the Embassy Theater on December 9th, 10th and 17th at 7:30pm and December 10th and 18th at 2pm.

There will also be a “Candlelight Messiah” performance on December 16 at 7:30 pm at Purdue University’s Auer Performance Hall in Fort Wayne.

Safari Wonderland

Safari Wonderland at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo opens December 2.

Visitors can meet Santa; decorate cookies and play games; visit the Coral Reef, Stingray Bay, Indiana Family Farm and the Central Zoo Loop; and ride the ZO & O. Railroad for free.

Opening hours are December 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd from 10am to 3pm .

Admission is free for zoo members, $8 for ages 13 and older, $6 for ages 2 to 12, and free for children under 2. The zoo is located at 3411 Sherman Blvd.

‘nutcracker’

The Fort Wayne Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker” opens December 2 at the United Arts Center at 303 East Main Street. Shows are December 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 9th and 10th at 7:30pm and December 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th at 2pm. Opening weekend performances include Fort Wayne Philharmonic’s Live music.

Tickets for opening weekend are $55 for adults and $45 for children. Tickets for shows without the Philharmonic are $45 for adults and $35 for children.

“Christmas Spirit”

The Heartland Sings’ annual “Christmas Spirit” concerts will be held in the Rotunda of the Allen County Courthouse on December 16th at 7:30pm and December 17th-18th at 3pm.

Performances include favorite carols and new holiday tunes by founding artistic director Robert Nance.
