Louvre Abu Dhabi launches its second Art Here exhibition, featuring 10 works by shortlisted artists for a total of US$60,000 Richard Mille Art Prize.
Under the theme “Icon and Iconic,” the Richard Mille Art Prize received 246 entries from artists in the GCC region. Their task is to explore how the notion of an “icon” resonates in contemporary art practice and how it influences new perspectives on art. Their work is currently on display at a museum on Saadiyat Island; the winner will be announced next year.
The five-member jury comprised Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, avid art collector and chairman of UAE Unlimited; Reem Fadda, director of the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation and curator of this year’s Art Here exhibition; Morad Montazami, Tate Modern, London Art historians and research curators for art museums; Halla guardFounder of HW Architecture; and Souraya Noujaim, Director of Science, Curatorial and Collection Management, Louvre Abu Dhabi.
Shortlisted artists represent diverse backgrounds, and their work spans a variety of mediums and subjects.The list includes Afra Daheri from UAE; Ayman Zedani from Saudi Arabia; my son avatani from Palestine; Elizabeth Dorazio from Brazil; Manal Al Dowayan from Saudi Arabia; Rand Abdul-Jabbar from Iraq; Simlin Mehra Agarwal from India; Sheikha Mazrou from the UAE; Vikram Dive Checkwas born in Beirut, grew up in Mumbai and now lives in Dubai; and Zenab AlAshemi from UAE.
The works on display present an eclectic exhibition covering themes such as the personal and the political; the human and the non-human; nature and the universe; Arab culture and contemporary practice; cultural and archaeological narratives; Site-specific conceptual works and videos are explored.
