Several football-loving frontline heroes who have worked tirelessly to fight the Covid-19 pandemic are now gearing up to catch their favorite teams

The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held in the Middle East for the first time, offering fans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of the biggest event in sport. Many football-loving healthcare workers are now preparing to travel to Qatar to watch their favorite teams play as they work tirelessly to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

This will be the second World Cup match that Dr Mehdi Afrit will be watching live. After witnessing one of the tightest World Cup quarter-finals between France and Italy in 1998, the Tunisian doctor was thrilled to witness another match of his lifetime.

The medical director and medical oncologist at Burjeel Specialist Hospital in Sharjah will witness his country’s match against defending champions France in the group stage of Qatar.

“I’m glad that after 22 years I [am going to] Go to another World Cup match. It will be a wonderful experience for me and my family,” said Dr Afrit, who will fly to Doha with his family and friends to watch the game on November 30. Compared to his first experience, This time it will most likely be more comfortable in terms of time and transportation facilities.

“We don’t need to travel for long periods of time. We can [now] Arrive at the stadium a few hours later, watch the game and go home the same day,” he said.

Former India Rajasthan Under-17 player Ijahar Ashraf, who is currently working as a registered nurse at Astor Hospital in Mankhur, is trying to secure a ticket to the knockout round in Qatar through friends.

An avid football fan since childhood, Ashraf played and played football for a living until he left home at 17 to study nursing. In this World Cup, he supports Portugal led by Ronaldo.

“I am a big Ronaldo fan. I believe no one can beat him; he is one of the best players in football [ever] seen. I want Portugal to win this World Cup for my heroes. Every Portuguese fan wants to see Ronaldo lift the World Cup and celebrate the title,” said the emergency room nurse.

“For a fan like me, it’s the best opportunity to see our superstars on the field. So I’m trying to get a ticket for the knockout game. I really hope I can get one,” he said.

‘It will be an unforgettable experience’

Dr Mohanad Diab, a big fan of Argentina and Lionel Messi, will join his family for his first World Cup. Although his native Sweden did not qualify, he is delighted that his second favorite, Argentina, is a strong contender.

“Participating in the World Cup for the first time will be an unforgettable experience. Although I am from Sweden, due to my busy schedule, I will not be able to watch the World Cup in Europe.”

Dr Diab, who is on the front lines of the fight against Covid-19, is excited about the possibility of major sporting events being held without any restrictions post-pandemic. A consultant medical oncologist at the Burjeel Day Surgery Center on Al Reem Island planned to watch both games while trying to buy tickets for the Argentina game. He regretted not being able to take part in last week’s friendly between the UAE and Argentina in Abu Dhabi.

“My children are delighted to see their favorite players, including Messi, grace the stadium with their magic,” Dr Diab said. He wants Messi to win the World Cup and end one of the most illustrious careers in football history.

“Football gives us joy”

Wisdom Kwabla Atatsi, a 27-year-old football fan from Ghana, plans to travel to Qatar to support his team in the stands. He is awaiting confirmation from his friends, who are currently struggling to secure tickets to the football event.

“In my home country, football is a sport that everyone plays. Football brings us joy; my childhood was spent playing football with friends nearby. Even [this] For years, whenever I had time, I played football,” said Atasi, a registered nurse at Aster Hospital in Sharjah.

Although he backed Ghana in this tournament, Atasi believes Brazil have the best team to win the title.

“Brazil has a balanced team. They have the talent to win titles,” he added.
