Dubai: RTA plans to achieve 100% electric hybrid taxi fleet by 2027-News

In 2020, the total number of environmentally friendly hybrids, electric taxis and luxury cars in Dubai will reach 4,683.

According to the Road and Transport Authority (RTA), approximately 50% of Dubai’s taxi fleet are environmentally friendly electric or hybrid vehicles. The authorities now aim to convert the entire fleet to green vehicles by 2027.

RTA Director General and Chairman of the Executive Board Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer stated that the total number of hybrid/electric taxis and luxury cars in Dubai in 2020 will reach 4,683.

Approximately 4,510 of these vehicles are hybrid taxis; a statement issued on Monday stated that the Dubai Taxi Company has 173 electric/hybrid luxury sedans.

“RTA has successfully added 2,434 hybrid vehicles, 170 electric vehicles and three hybrid luxury cars to the Dubai taxi fleet. The number of hybrid taxis operated by the franchise company is 2,076.

“A six-year plan…strives to increase the proportion of hybrid taxis in the fleet from the current 50% to 80% by 2025, and achieve the ultimate goal of 100% by 2027,” Al Tayer added.

RTA is the first entity in the region to test hybrid vehicles powered by fuel and electricity. The results showed that the vehicle traveled more than 550,000 kilometers without any major problems.

“As a result, fuel consumption was saved by 34% and carbon emissions were reduced by 34%. In 2017, RTA deployed Tesla electric vehicles with multiple self-driving technology components as part of Dubai’s taxi limousine fleet Operate,” Al Tayer said.

In December 2019, RTA commissioned the first hydrogen-powered taxi in the Middle East as a luxury car service at Dubai International Airport.
