On November 20, Kazakhstan held a provisional presidential election to elect the president of Kazakhstan.
The presidential election against a series of fundamental and comprehensive political reforms continues the process of decentralization of Central Asian states. Those measures include a proposal to limit presidential terms to seven years and an announcement of snap presidential elections this fall.
Voter turnout was 68 percent, according to exit polls. More than 1,600 interviewers polled more than 3,500 citizens outside polling stations, the Astana Times reported.
Preliminary official results are expected to be released on November 22, at a time determined by the Central Election Commission (CEC). (Arnie)
