Regular service for the 2022 season resumed last weekend after George Russell’s dramatic and emotional victory in his first Formula 1 race in Brazil. Verstappen never seemed to lose, while Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc battled for second in the race and title – a battle brilliantly won by the Ferrari driver.
As Alex Kalinauckas explains in our in-depth report, a different strategy between Red Bull teammates Verstappen and Perez contributed to Leclerc’s success. But that could hardly be blamed on Verstappen, not least because his excellent tire management allowed him to make a one stop – there were several other factors that left Perez 1.3 seconds behind.
Verstappen’s victory took his season tally to 15, so we also compared the Dutchman’s season with the best of previous greats.
In stark contrast to the finale of the 2021 season, the feel of the Yas Marina paddock was very good – much of it aimed at Vettel’s final grand prix as a driver.
