BRASILIA, Nov. 25 (AP) — A gunman armed with a semiautomatic pistol and wearing a bulletproof vest shot and killed two teachers Friday after storming two schools in southeastern Brazil, authorities said and a student, and injured 11 others.
The state’s public security secretariat said in a statement that the shootings took place at a public school and a private school in the small town of Alacruz, Espírito Santo state, on the same street. It was not immediately clear whether authorities had apprehended the shooter.
Security camera footage showed the attackers wearing bulletproof vests and using semi-automatic pistols to carry out the attack, Espirito Santo Public Security Minister Marcio Celante said in video provided by the Secretariat’s press office.
In addition to the deaths, 11 people were wounded, including nine teachers, Celante said, noting that at public schools, gunmen entered the teachers’ lounge after breaking locks.
The gunman covered his face, making it difficult to recognize him, Celant said, adding that police were investigating whether he was assisted by others.
School shootings are uncommon in Brazil, but have occurred more frequently in recent years.
In a video posted to social media, Espírito Santo Gov. Renato Casagrande said he was monitoring the situation and had sent authorities to investigate. (Associated Press)
