China’s “iPhone City” dismisses 870 workers without notice | World News

[ad_1]

Zhengzhou, China — the capital of Henan Province, known as the “iPhone City” — moved 870 workers to a hub about 230 miles from a neighboring province without giving them advance notice of measures to curb the spread of Covid.

The government of Xuzhou city in Jiangsu province said in a statement on its official WeChat account on Saturday that the workers had been transported to Xuzhou city in Jiangsu province “without prior notice” early Friday. It did not say whether anyone had tested positive.

Zhengzhou, home to Apple Inc’s largest iPhone manufacturing base, has catapulted into the global spotlight since videos surfaced on social media showing violent clashes among hundreds of workers over unpaid wages and fears of virus infection. Apple’s main global manufacturing partner, Foxconn Technology Group, later began offering 10,000 yuan ($1,395) in incentives to any employee who chose to leave.

The Xuzhou statement said most had been moved elsewhere through so-called closed-loop arrangements. The rest are placed in another pandemic foam system that limits contact with the outside world. The individuals are said to be former employees of “key enterprises” in the Zhengzhou Linkong Economic Zone, although they were not identified. Foxconn representatives did not respond to inquiries after hours on Saturday.

Zhengzhou earlier this week announced a five-day lockdown of its main urban area as local officials tried to quell the widening outbreak. While the so-called “movement control” area does not include the area where Foxconn is located, the area where the iPhone factory is located has been classified as a high-risk area, meaning that lockdown-like restrictions on movement remain in place.

Xuzhou said the local Covid risk is manageable, and citizens are now required to present a negative test result within 48 hours to enter public places, shortened from the previous 72 hours.
