Jennifer Gray Teases “Several Other Characters” Will Return in Dirty Dancing Sequel
The 62-year-old actress, who will reprise her role as Frances “Baby” Housman in the long-awaited sequel to the 1987 classic, revealed she won’t be the only familiar face audiences will see.
She said: “It’s happening. [We’re not filming] until spring…
“Baby is several years older. You’ll see several other characters from the original.
“It’s tricky and exciting.”
Jennifer confirmed that the sequel will share the same setting as the original.
She told ‘Extra’: “I would say you can count on it being at Kellerman, going back to Kellerman.”
Jennifer will also serve as an executive producer on the sequel, after she confirmed that the late Patrick Swayze’s Johnny Caster role will not be recast.
She said: “All I can say is that no one can replace anyone who has passed away – you should never try to repeat anything as magical as that.
“You’re just going after something different.”
But director Jonathan Levine joked that Johnny will still be “a part” of the plot.
“Johnny was part of the baby’s journey in the story,” he said.
The filmmaker also promised fans that he won’t “ruin [their] Childhood” by sullying their memory of the original with the sequel.
“While the original Dirty Dancing has always been one of my favorite movies, I never thought I’d be directing a sequel,” he said.
“Through co-writing, I fell in love with the characters (old and new), the world of the Catskills, New York in the 1990s, and the music, from the original movies to 90s hip hop.
“I can’t wait to work with Jennifer to bring this beautiful story of summer, romance and dance to a new generation of fans.
“For those of you who have been working together for a long time, I promise we won’t ruin your childhood. We will do it with maturity, ambition, and above all, love.”
