There are only three major golf courses in the UAE capital, and all three are championship layouts. Although there are not many activities at night, the culture, entertainment, and leisure of the long weekend are still very good. Adventure is available. The drive in Abu Dhabi isn’t bombed; it’s just the kind of putt that twists along a sea of clear green to collect a no-intruder card that puts it high on the list of golf naysayers in the region.
You walk in and think it’s some kind of Dubai suburb, the desert is still visible, the scent of frankincense wafts through the air, and the sound of horses’ hooves lingers like a footnote to history. Instead, you’ll find the opposite. Instead, you’ll find an ultra-modern port filled with supercars and a superb golf course covered in lush foliage that will make you feel like you’re playing in the tropics.
Since Abu Dhabi is not in the middle of the desert, that’s fair enough. Instead, it is a small island in the Persian Gulf, not far from the mainland. Most of the city is on the island, with some on nearby Saadiyat Island. It’s hard to believe that less than a century ago, the city was just a dull fishing village surrounded by sea and desert.
Now look out over the Abu Dhabi creek as you lounge in your marble pool on the beach at Shangri-La.
It’s unbelievable to be in the grand mosque with its lights. Naturally, when prospectors discovered gold in the late 1950s, the world’s sixth largest oil reserve was a defining moment for change. Yas Island, a man-made island transformed into a hub of adventure, relaxation and entertainment, is one of many modern wonders that have emerged since then. There are plenty of things to do on the island, but for golfers Yas Links Golf Course is the best.

On most holes, give the hapless amateur a second chance to avoid falling into the water. Accuracy is very important, though, and a wrong shot will either end up in the drink, or in something quite thick. The signature Par-3 17th hole winds its way around the shoreline inlet, requiring 200 yards of current and some pretty harsh tank bunkers.
If you don’t have any handicaps, this course can be brutal to play from the cue, and much more fun to play from the white tees. This should be the only course you can play in Abu Dhabi.
The Abu Dhabi Golf Club is the most famous and busiest course in the emirate, hosting numerous European Tour events. Imagine a top-notch park course with few trees, lots of sand (at least 90 bunkers) and water hazards (water holes as many as 12 holes). Most holes on this course are played from left to right, making it easier for players who prefer to play down their shots. If you want fewer balls, there are options to tee off on the shorter nine holes for a challenge and more fun than the championship layout offers. Touring golfers who want to play more than one round on the course often choose to stay at the Westin, which is located in the center of the course.
