Alongside the likes of Alex Hales, Chris Lynn, James Vince and Adil Rashid, Hatzoglu is shaping up to be a major draw. On his first attack, he passed the ball to Charles and found his advantage before Mohn smacked the ball straight to the screen’s Fabian Allen, who grabbed it brilliantly with one hand. Hold the ball. The Morrisville Samp Army trailed 21-5 when Hatzoglou beat a destructive Miller in his second, and their chase for 101 was as good as it was finished.
But this is Hatzoglou’s day, and in many ways, it’s becoming his game. In a format where teams tend to score at least 10 points or more, his 3-of-6 stats are remarkable. His economy rate in four games is just seven, and he has a wicket for every seven balls.
On November 17, Hatzoglou sat for the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) exam and later that day flew to the UAE to take the Abu Dhabi T10 exam. He’s still awaiting the results of those exams, but it’s safe to say he’s passed nearly all of them with the ball in his hand.
As well as Tuesday’s three wickets, his scalps in the Championship included the likes of Suresh Raina and Tim David. Now, in the eight bowls he has taken in the Championship, he has just 56 runs with seven wickets.
“Every hitter really wants to take you down,” Harzoglu said after the game. “Honestly, my plans haven’t really changed. I’ve never played T10 before, but I just wanted to hit the top of the stumps with more variation than I could possibly use in T20.”
He wouldn’t even be here if Paulo Fabres and his team-mates at Abu Dhabi hadn’t picked him up at the last minute. In true Hatzoglou fashion, he didn’t even know until he heard from Tymal Mills, whom he’d known from their days at the Perth Scorchers.
Hatzoglou said: “I was actually in Spain on a golf trip when I was with some mates. Going on with our evenings, I didn’t realize there was an extra pick for each team .I didn’t know it at the time when I got picked, but I got a message from Tymal Mills and that’s when I realized I was actually picked up.”
“When I was at The Hundred’s Oval Invincibles, we watched my bowling with analyst Freddie Wilde,” he said. “The speed is very unique, I get the drift and the bounce. I almost get it but no spin, but overall the wow factor is huge for me.”
The element of surprise will no doubt diminish over time, but at the moment it’s working wonders, as the saying goes: “If it ain’t broken, why fix it?”
Hatzoglou will head to the Big Bash League after the Abu Dhabi T10, but unlike last year, he will not be back at the KPMG offices in the new year. The plan is to fully embrace the T20 globetrotter lifestyle. Who knows what’s going to happen next, but the idea alone is exciting enough.
