World News | Pak: TTP’s ceasefire cancellation may prompt Army chief to overturn Bajwa’s apolitical army doctrine

[ad_1]

Islamabad [Pakistan]Dec 3 (ANI): The Pakistani Taliban Movement (TTP) has announced the end of a six-month ceasefire with Pakistan, which could prompt new army chief Asim Munir to oust the former agency in charge. Politicians are frustrated by Qamar Javed Bajwa’s army of apolitical doctrine.

TTP is an umbrella group for several radical Sunni militant groups trying to establish Sharia law in Pakistan. It has sanctuaries on both sides of the Durand Line that divides Pakistan and Afghanistan; it has been a known ally of the Taliban regime, which until recently was seen as a proxy for Islamabad, writes Magda Lipan in the policy research group POREG.

Earlier, on November 28, the TTP called off a shaky ceasefire with the government and ordered militants to carry out attacks across the country.

According to the TTP statement, they canceled the ceasefire agreement reached with the government in June, Dawn reported.

TTP’s decision to end the ceasefire shows that Pakistan’s banned group TTP has lost trust in the Afghan Taliban’s “Haqqani faction” and has allied itself with the rival “Kandahari faction” led by Defense Minister Mullah Yakub. According to the think tank, this is evident in the TTP threat that has emerged when Asim Munir became Pakistan’s new army chief of staff.

The Army Chief of Staff played a key role in the military campaign against the TTP. He also targeted and killed some of the TTP’s top commanders, including Abdul Wali, alias Omar Khalid Khorasani.

Munir’s appointment and Islamabad’s growing tilt toward Washington did not go well with the Afghan Taliban in Kabul.

It is no coincidence that TTP activity in Pakistan has increased since the Taliban returned to Kabul. These will now intensify. It will lay the groundwork for an escalation of Pakistan’s military operations against Pashtun tribes and Afghan jihadists. This will exacerbate political and economic instability in Pakistan.

Aside from the growing trust deficit in Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, the Pakistan Army’s crackdown on “their people” in Bannu, Rajmalwat and other parts of the border area is a provocation to the TTP, POREG reported.

Since returning to Kabul more than a year ago, the Taliban 2.0 has been at loggerheads with Pakistan over an international border that Islamabad wants to keep separate. Moreover, the persecution of the Pashtun tribe by the Pakistani army has made things worse and intensified the grievances between the two countries. The TTP has been accusing the Pakistani army of taking military action against the mujahideen in Afghanistan.

TTP’s decision is not even good for China. China is seeking a presence in the Kabul theater and wants to extend the ambitious China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan. The militant group has carried out deadly attacks on CPEC projects in the past. Now they will increase, according to POREG. (Arnie)
