Santa is coming to Aiken.
He also brought Buddy the Elf and his friends and family to the Aiken Community Theater. The theater will host ELF The Musical, an adaptation of the hit Christmas film, Elf. The film is about Buddy, a man raised in the North Pole who considers himself an elf. When he learns the truth, he travels to New York City to find his biological father. There, he works to show his family and New York what Christmas is really about.
The ACT show was directed by John Lewis, who said there were some differences between film and play.
“There were a few different scenarios,” Lewis said. “A lot of things were compressed. There were things in the movie that weren’t in the show because you just had to move things around and add so much music. Some characters might be in the movie but not in the show.”
Lewis said the show has 10 to 12 musical numbers, ranging from solo to duet to entire company numbers.
“There are a lot of songs that I really like,” Lewis said. “The opening track, the opening track is really good. I do like the… Jovie and Buddy duet (“Never in love with an elf”), mostly Jovie because she (Jenna Odle) can really Sing it, and she’s a good singer, and it’s a fun song.”
There will also be some surprises for viewers, Lewis said. One of them is that young children play many different roles.
“We didn’t have enough male auditions, so we cast kids in the roles of grown men,” Lewis said. “So we’re just having teenagers be cops and kids being security guards. It’s a lot of fun, they’re going to do more than they’re supposed to be, and it’s really interesting to me, they’re going to be a lot more than they can be.” Much more, if they can perform as written.”
Lewis said he wanted to direct the show because it was fun. He loves working with kids, he loves comedy.
He added that people should come to the show because “Elf” is a beloved holiday classic.
“I don’t think anybody will be disappointed when they come to see it,” Lewis said. “Our production is very character-driven. We haven’t built complex sets yet. First, we don’t have the time, but my preference is not to elaborate sets if I can. On this show, because there are so many scene changes, So it’s easier to work better. We’re using predictions to set sentiment.”

Choir and others include Rachel Hatfield, Nathan Jones, Jeremy McCoy, Aubrey Zelf, Jude Voyles, Hilary Curioulos , Anastasia Curioulos, Joanna Curioulos, Elora Kleipak, Savannah Warren, Sierra Spivey, Teagan Wright, Sarah Wright, Alena Crowley, Aubree Campbell, Bridget Elmshaueser, Scott Woodworth, Daniel Woodworth, Nathan Woodworth, Andrew Woodworth and Claire Woodworth.
Lewis said the show was about two hours long, including intermission.
Showings will be at the Aiken Community Theater on Dec. 9-10, Dec. 15-17 at 7:30pm and Dec. 11 at 2pm. The December 15th performance will have American Sign Language interpretation.
