Football legend Pele is in a stable condition in hospital being treated for a respiratory infection, medical officials said.

The 82 year old He responded well to care and was admitted earlier this week so doctors could reevaluate his cancer treatment, according to an announcement from St. Paul’s Albert Einstein Hospital.

It comes after a city newspaper reported that Bailey would be moved to palliative care after chemotherapy for colon cancer failed to work as expected.

But the hospital said his condition had not deteriorated in the past 24 hours.

Folha de S.Paulo’s report was picked up by the world media on Saturday, sparking warm wishes from across the football world, including England captain Harry Kane.

“First of all, we also send our best wishes to him and his family,” he told a World Cup news conference.

“He was an inspiration for our game, an incredible footballer and an incredible human being.”

Asked about the advice Pele gave him, urging the Tottenham striker to never believe he was the best player in the world and to keep learning, Kane said: “It was great to hear those words from him at the time. Really special for me.

“And I’ve always felt like I’m someone who’s been learning and will continue to learn for the rest of my career, so his advice was spot on.

“Of course it’s sad to hear that but we wish him the best, not just me but the whole England team.”
