December 3 (United Press International) — SNCF said it had canceled more than half of its trips scheduled for this weekend due to a nationwide strike by rail conductors.

The cancellation has severely affected rail traffic between France and Switzerland, with only one in every three regular train running.
Trains to Switzerland and Italy have been cut by two-thirds, trains to Germany have been halved, while all trains to Spain have been cancelled, SCNF said.
Some 3,000 striking workers are employed by French intercity service providers responsible for passenger safety and traffic operations. Nearly 60% of intercity or TGV train services were canceled on weekends.
Services are expected to gradually return to normal on Monday.
Union leaders said the strike was an attempt to draw attention to rules requiring members to work three weekends a month and sleep away from home more than 10 nights a month.
The command union met with management twice before the strike, but there was no progress. Other unions have joined in their support and have submitted strike notices over the Christmas and New Year weekends to put pressure on the SNCF.
