Fan buys famed Oregon Goonies house for $1.7M | Entertainment

ASTORIA, Oregon (AP) — The listing agent for the Victorian home featured in the “Going Goonies” movie in Astoria, Ore., said this week that the likely new owner is the For fans of classic adult films about friendship and love. Treasure hunting, he pledged to preserve and protect landmarks.

The 1896 home, which boasts panoramic views of the Columbia River flowing into the Pacific Ocean, hit the market in November with an asking price of nearly $1.7 million.

The deal is expected to close by mid-January, said Jordan Miller of John L. Scott Real Estate, The Oregonian/OregonLive ReportThe new owner, who describes himself as a serial entrepreneur, will be known by then, Miller said.

Since the movie’s release in 1985, movie fans have flocked to their home in historic Port Astoria in Northwest Oregon. The city celebrated Goonies Day on June 7, the film’s release date, and welcomed thousands of people to the event.

“After word got out that the property was up for sale, we had multiple offers with an even higher asking price, and we had a full back-up offer,” Miller said.

According to Miller, seller Sandy Preston is passing on movie memorabilia she collected or received, while some of the home’s furniture, restored to its original 1896 style, may also be sold to buyers.

Preston is known to welcome tourists for the most part. But she lives in the house, and the constant crowds stress her out, sometimes prompting her to close it to keep traffic out.

After the film’s 30th anniversary, which attracted about 1,500 visitors a day in 2015, Preston posted a “No Trespassing” sign prohibiting visitors from entering the property on foot. She reopened to the public in August.

Based on the Steven Spielberg story, the film follows a group of friends as they fight to protect their home from sprawling country clubs and foreclosures. Along the way, they discover an ancient treasure map that leads them on an adventure and allows them to save their “Goon Docks” community.
