[ad_1]

ABU DHABI, 5th December, 2022 (WAM) — Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) celebrated World Soil Day (WSD) on 5th December, organizing an event entitled “Artificial Intelligence and The activities of Remote Sensing Technology-A” are pioneering steps towards the future. “

The event showcased the Agency’s efforts to employ artificial intelligence and remote sensing technologies in soil quality monitoring in the emirate to maintain a healthy and safe environment, protect the environment and preserve Abu Dhabi’s natural resources.

The event was held at EAD Headquarters in the Al Mamoura Building and was attended by EAD Secretary General Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri and Acting Undersecretary for Biodiversity and Marine Life Dr Nasir Sultan. Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE), Ronald Vargas, Secretary and Land and Water Officer, Global Soil Partnership, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and Dr Augusto Becerra Lopez-Lavalle, Director of the International Center for Biological Salt-Alkali Agriculture (ICBA).

Many domestic and foreign experts in artificial intelligence, remote sensing and their application in the field of environment also participated in this event.

During the event, the second phase of the Abu Dhabi Soil Quality UAV Monitoring Project launched in 2021 was highlighted. UAVs have expanded the scope of aerial surveys. EAD will build the first soil spectral library through this project, which will be the first in the region the first home.

Dr Al Dhaheri said, “In implementing the UAE Government’s strategy in the field of artificial intelligence in the environmental sector, and in line with the UAE Centennial 2071, which aims to make the UAE a global leader in all sectors, EAD has been keen to leverage the latest technologies. These include remote sensing, artificial intelligence and drones to improve the accuracy and efficiency of soil monitoring and management, and facilitate and increase the effectiveness of on-site inspections.”

“This project will pave the way for a significant amount of dedicated research to enhance soil quality monitoring methods and clean-up solutions, and will provide the basis for additional research that can utilize remote sensing data and artificial intelligence techniques. It will also help develop immune systems to protect the environment. A tool influenced by space,” he added.

It is worth noting that the drone soil exploration project is the first project in the region to use artificial intelligence technology to predict the concentration of soil pollutants.

The project aims to enhance traditional soil monitoring programs by using the latest technology and generating high-precision data over a large area.

The program also aims to develop the competencies of EAD staff in areas of digital, technical and scientific excellence through workshops focused on promoting concepts in remote sensing, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

In the second phase of the project, drones were used to complete the survey of approximately 4 million square meters of industrial land in the Mussafah area. Several artificial intelligence and machine learning models were also investigated, which were considered the most suitable for the type of data in the project.

The AI models recorded varying degrees of accuracy in predicting soil element concentrations, ranging from 68% to 90% accuracy for the spectral datasets used.

The agency is working on developing and training algorithms for artificial intelligence models to improve accuracy, intelligence and efficiency over time as the amount of data fed into them increases.
