U.S. and allied officials said their intelligence indicated that suicide bombers threatened to attack the airport.
The U.S. military confirmed on Thursday that a large explosion occurred outside the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, and the U.S.-led airlift of thousands of people is still going on inside the compound.
Since the Taliban seized power earlier this month, thousands of people have gathered around the airport, trying to flee the country by Western airlift.
Western countries have warned that in the days when mass evacuation is about to end, Kabul Airport may be attacked.
Some countries urge people to avoid airports, and an official said there is a threat of suicide bombing. But just a few days before the end of the evacuation work-even a few hours in some countries-it seems that few people have noticed the call.
In the past week, the airport has been some of the hottest images of the chaotic end of America’s longest war and the Taliban takeover.
“We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul Airport. The current casualties are unclear. We will provide more details when possible,” said Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.
