Emirates Global Aluminum, the UAE’s largest industrial company outside of oil and gas, has announced the launch of this year’s edition of Al Robot. This is a competition that challenges students of UAE universities and higher education institutions to design and manufacture an industrial robot for EGA’s aluminum smelter.
Since its inception in 2017, the Al Robot competition has provided students with the opportunity to develop their Industry 4.0 skills through the practical application of academic knowledge in the real world.
The competition encourages the use of innovative and creative engineering skills that are critical to the future of the UAE’s industry.
A robot that can measure thickness
This year, students are required to design and build a robot that can measure the thickness of material inside the EGA reduction cell, a task currently performed manually.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, said: “The EGA Al robotics competition is now in its fifth year and we are proud to look back at the innovative solutions submitted by university students in previous editions, which are now being implemented in our smelter Run.Building the skills of our young people and encouraging them to apply these skills in industry is critical to achieving the UAE’s 300 billion action industrial growth strategy. I look forward to seeing the best from our country’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields this year Student entries.”
Each selected team will receive AED50,000 (US$13,613) to design and build a prototype of their robot for testing at the EGA. The winners will be announced in 2023 and shortlisted teams will win cash prizes worth a total of AED 100,000.
clean up the sludge
Last year’s Al Robot challenged students to develop a robot capable of removing silt and slurry from the aeration tanks at EGA’s Al Taweelah site. A team from UAE University won the competition. Aeration increases the amount of oxygen in the water, protecting the marine environment.
EGA’s technology development team works extensively with universities in the UAE and internationally, combining EGA’s industry expertise with the latest academic thinking. EGA’s academic partners include Khalifa University, UAE University, Abu Dhabi University, Heriot-Watt University, American University of Sharjah, UAE Rochester Institute of Technology and Higher Institute of Technology, University of Auckland, University of New South Wales and Massachusetts Institute of Technology . – trade arab news agency
