Hyderabad: The beautifully restored 17th-century Bansilalpet stepwell won the prestigious Big 5 Construction Impact Award in Dubai on Monday.
The stepwell was officially inaugurated by Minister of Municipalities and Urban Development KT Rama Rao on Monday, before being conferred the title. stepwell received a Big 5 Construction Impact award for ‘Sustainable Revitalization of Traditional Rainwater Harvesting’.
The stepwell project has been named the recipient of the Sustainability Initiative of the Year Award.
The Big 5 supports the development of a circular economy in the region and abroad and the UAE’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
Stormwater projects and construction firm Kshetra Consultants, which completed the restoration work, accepted the award at the Dubai World Trade Center late Monday night.
Over a year, multiple departments worked with groups including the Gandipet Welfare Society, the Rainwater Project and local people to renovate the stepwell. Urban development authorities will turn it into a tourist destination and cultural center.
Over the next four months, 10 more stepwells will be rehabilitated, according to an announcement by Special Principal Secretary for Urban Development Arvind Kumar on Tuesday. Authorities completed restoration work on the abandoned and rubbish-filled stepwell.
It used to provide drinking water to the community, but became a dump after neglect. The restored stepwell will raise the water table and prevent flooding.
