“We are delighted to announce the launch of Zimbabwe’s own franchise-based T10 league, a robust format we believe is just what our ever-changing, fast-paced world needs. As we partner with Mr. Shaji Ul Mulk and Co. As we embark on this exciting journey, we hope to transform our game and build a massive global fan base by providing the world’s top athletes with one of the best sports platforms to showcase their talents,” ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said in an official statement released by ZC.
ZC believes the competition will attract elite players from around the world after the Stanbic T20 tested the waters for over a decade. The league includes 20 foreign players from five of Zimbabwe’s domestic teams, including Chris Gale and Sean Tate, and has a headline sponsor but is owned and managed by ZC. It lasted three seasons when Stanbic pulled out, and since then, Zimbabwe’s domestic competition has played out with little fanfare, if any.

The Zim Afro T10 League is expected to attract top players from around the world, with the inaugural tournament scheduled for March 29, 2023.
Participating franchises, player auction dates, fixtures and other details will be announced in due course.
“This is an exciting addition to our cricket schedule and the potential of the Zim Afro T10 League to drive the reach, appeal and growth of the sport cannot be overemphasized. We have done a lot to prepare, to ensure that by March 2023, everything will be in place to host a tournament that will provide great entertainment for fans, top-level competition for players and broad exposure for investors,” ZC Managing Director Givemore Makoni said.
Zimbabwean cricket has not been immune to the country’s economic woes, either, with the sport languishing in a deep debt crisis, its administration at the International Criminal Court temporarily suspended, and some of its biggest names (Heath Streak and Bren Dan Taylor) were suspended for their involvement in corruption.
However, the sport appears to be growing in popularity as Zimbabwe’s men’s team advanced to the last 12 of the most recent T20 World Cup, while their women’s team narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2023 T20 World Cup in South Africa.
