Wolff reflects on Abu Dhabi controversy: Verstappen is a well-deserved champion

[ad_1]

It has been almost a year since its controversial end to the conclusion of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Formula 1 season, when Lewis Hamilton lost the world title to Max Verstappen.

In the post-race incident, Hamilton and the Mercedes team remained silent, clearly outraged by what had happened.

It took Mercedes boss Toto Wolff a few days to host a playoff press conference on Zoom, with the Austrian appearing against a sombre backdrop.

On the F1 Beyond the Grid podcast, he was asked if Hamilton was still thinking about a title fight in 2021.

“I don’t think Hamilton is bothered by it, he knows how to focus on his job,” the Austrian said.

“Abu Dhabi 2021 is going to haunt us for a long time, maybe forever, but mostly it happens when you sit quietly and start thinking about decisions that were made in the last few minutes that were not in line with the regulations, but you stop thinking about it Those are on race weekend.”

“We’ve moved on. Anyway, for me personally, once we accept the result. We don’t want to go to court, even though we might have a very good reason. We don’t want to win a championship in court.

“Marquez was a deserving champion and so was Lewis. ‘It could have been the best win’ that day, but it wasn’t.”

Wolff: FIA admits their mistake, we move on

The team owner admitted he would rather forget the legend for the immediate future, believing it would be better to move on and look to the future.

He said: “This is the end of the matter, the title has been decided, we should not mention it any more.”

“Max is a two-time world champion, a well-deserved one. Mistakes have been made, the FIA has acknowledged and now we have to move on.

“That doesn’t mean I’ll never think about it again because honesty is important and the stopwatch never lies. Maybe just a little bit.”

Wolff said he didn’t feel any emotion returning to the game nearly 12 months after the season ended.

He added: “Zero, I’m in the same hotel room. Same show, not a single thought.”
