As the school reopens on Sunday, traffic will increase exponentially, with school buses and motorists competing for space on the roads of the UAE. This makes road safety, the safety of school children and other motorists the focus of attention.

The Dubai Police announced an initiative called “A Day Without Accidents” to ensure safer roads in the emirate. They want to make sure that there will be no accidents on the first day of school.

According to Dubai Police, educational institutions in the emirate will welcome 1.14 million students.

Road safety experts urge motorists to pay attention to safety and hope that accidents will decrease after school starts.

Thomas Edelmann, founder and managing director of RoadSafetyUAE, said: “Unfortunately, we have encountered a lot of bad behavior around the school when it comes to picking up children.” Khaleej Times.

“We as parents, motorists and road users must show the safest driving behavior and road behavior around the school. All this is to teach our children correct and safe behavior and set an example for them,” he added road.

Edelmann emphasized a few points about how to proceed.

“Be extra vigilant and careful when driving close to schools, kindergartens and universities. We may encounter a lot of traffic around the school, especially in the morning and early afternoon. Pay attention to additional traffic guidance and follow the instructions of the school staff. Guide or police. Drivers abandon or collect children must not hinder traffic. Take care of other drivers like you want to be taken care of. Park your car safely, even a few steps away from school-a few steps are good for you and your children . Parents should abide by time management discipline and leave early because there are often traffic delays around the school. Parents should guide them and/or give them safety instructions to reach the school/your vehicle safely when picking up or picking up their children. The children are to them Parents learn, so they must be role models for road safety, especially around schools. Parents must educate their children to behave correctly on road safety around schools,” Edelma nn explained.

Edelmann also pointed out what needs to be done around the school bus.

“Be extra careful when you are around the school bus. When the school bus stops allowing students to get on and off, please observe the yellow warning signs and flashing red lights. You must stop to let the students pass safely. Be very careful that students who want to cross the road appear on the school bus. Front or back. Pay great attention to students crossing the road to reach the school bus. Pay attention to your speed and be prepared to brake. Be polite and generous to the school bus, don’t cut off “in front of them, show caring attitude to the children they transport. It is also important to teach our children correct and safe school bus behavior,” he elaborated.

According to Edelman, the speed limits around Dubai school districts vary, with some places having a speed limit of 30 km/h, while others have a speed limit of 40 km/h.

According to the Federal Traffic Law of the UAE that came into effect on July 1, 2017, motorists who fail to stop when the school bus driver activates the stop sign will be fined 1,000 dirhams and receive 10 black points.

If the school bus driver fails to activate the stop sign or does not follow the traffic instructions, he will face a fine of 500 dirhams and 6 black spots.

Edelman also explained the behavior in the school bus.

“When approaching the school bus pick-up point, cross the road safely. The same is true when getting off the bus. Do not run into or off the school bus, but walk normally. Outside the school bus, do not stand in the dangerous area inside. If your child can reach the bus, They are too close. Take a seat immediately, fasten your seat belt, sit down, and always face forward. When the bus is running, keep the bus aisle clear at all times. Always keep your head, hands and arms in the public Inside the car. Stay in your seat until the bus comes to a complete stop. Always follow the instructions of the school bus driver and school bus attendant. They are real experts, and they need to follow the words like a teacher,” Edelman said.

Edelmann also welcomed the Dubai Police’s efforts to ensure zero accidents.

“Improving awareness of safe behaviors is the most important factor in achieving more road safety. Therefore, we appreciate the efforts of all relevant stakeholders to raise awareness by using the means at hand, such as the police, RTA, MOI, school organizations, etc.,” he said.

“We at RoadSafetyUAE are promoting safety around schools and school buses on our social media, as well as student safety behaviors on school buses,” Edelman added.
