Why did Russia invade Ukraine? The Kremlin explains again | World News

[ad_1]

The Kremlin said Russia invaded Ukraine because it feared the Minsk accords would be ignored, Russian news agencies quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying. The Minsk agreements are a ceasefire and constitutional reform agreement between Kiev and Russia-backed separatist forces. These agreements were brokered in 2014 and 2015 by Russia, France and Germany.

Seeing that the agreement could not be enforced, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine in February. Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of violating the Minsk agreements.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded when asked whether Russia understood it had been “deceived” about the Minsk agreement. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “Of course, it became apparent over time.

“Moreover, President Putin and our other representatives have been saying that non-stop,” Dmitry Peskov was quoted by the TASS news agency as saying.

“But all this was ignored by other participants in the negotiation process. This is the prelude to special military operations,” Dmitry Peskov added.

Earlier, one of the deal’s sponsors, former German chancellor Angela Merkel, told Die Zeit that the 2014 deal “tried to give Ukraine time” – a time Kiev had used to become more capable self defense.

Russian media and politicians were quick to slam it as a betrayal by Angela Merkel.
