This weekend, the United Arab Emirates launched the Arab world’s first moon landing mission from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The highly-anticipated moment for the country is one that marks the start of the country’s long-term lunar exploration program.
The Rashid rover is now on its 140-day journey and will land on the lunar surface in April 2023. To witness this remarkable occasion, Sheikh Mohammed and other key members conducted a live-streamed launch from the MBRSC Mission Control Centre.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, expressed his pride in a video on Instagram praising the UAE for launching the Arab world’s first mission to the moon . The team watched as the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off to send the Rasheed probe into space.
He said in the post, “The United Arab Emirates launched the Explorer Rashid today with the aim of landing on the moon. If the mission is successful, it will be the fourth and first Arab in the world to go to the moon.”
In a Twitter post, he later shared images of the mission, saying: “Going to the moon means reaching a special site in the ambition of an ambitious nation and an ambitious people.”
“Explorer Rashid is part of the UAE’s ambitious space program…from Mars…through the Moon…to Venus…our aim is to spread knowledge, develop our capabilities and leave a mark on human history under the scientific footsteps,”
