December 12 (United Press International) — Norway’s new offshore gas production will help improve the production plateau at Europe’s only large-scale liquefied natural gas plant, Norwegian energy company Equinor said on Monday.
Equinor said the first phase of the Askeladd field, linked to the larger Snohvit field, could now deliver large volumes of gas to the Hammerfest LNG plant on Melkoya island, south of the Arctic Circle.
Thor Johan Haave, Equinor’s vice president of operations and maintenance at Hammerfest, said: “Askeladd is producing now (and) this gas will help extend the plateau production of Melkoya’s Hammerfest LNG for up to Three years.”
Under normal circumstances, Hammerfest accounts for about 5% of Norway’s total gas exports, enough to meet the needs of about 6.5 million average European households.
Norway is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of crude oil and natural gas, an importance only more pronounced as it relies almost entirely on hydroelectric power to power its economy.
