Eversight and the Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DoH), the regulator for the healthcare industry in the emirate, are collaborating to establish the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s first eye and tissue bank.
According to a press release, the partnership was formalized at the recent International Conference on Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Initiatives in Abu Dhabi.
“The establishment of the UAE’s first eye and tissue bank will provide an important resource for the approximately one million people in the region who suffer from corneal blindness, including more than 12,000 in the UAE,” said Erik Hellier, Director of Global Development. vision. “We are delighted to be partnering with the DoH on this project, which directly aligns with our goal of creating and restoring vision health globally, and uses our expertise, cultural competence and philanthropic support to help the UAE develop its own eye bank infrastructure.”
Additionally, under the terms of the agreement, Eversight will handle the development and implementation of comprehensive medical standards, quality assurance protocols and standard operating procedures in accordance with all UAE laws and regulations and eye bank best practices.
DoH will be responsible for obtaining all necessary approvals to establish and operate an eye and tissue bank, act as an importer of corneas and other eye-related tissues in the region, and work to integrate the eye/tissue bank program with the UAE’s national organ donation programme.
The initiative will also enhance mutual collaboration with knowledge sharing, human capacity building and clinical research related activities.

According to the press release, an estimated 2.2 billion people worldwide are affected by blindness and visual impairment. Roughly 1 billion of these people are dealing with blindness or vision impairment, which could be considered preventable or underaddressed. This includes 12 million people with corneal blindness, making it the fourth leading cause of blindness worldwide.
