The Tarmiyah area has witnessed numerous attacks by the Islamic State group since Iraqi security forces ousted the group in a military operation assisted by a US-led coalition.

Islamic State’s territorial control in Iraq and Syria has been shattered by a years-long campaign, but the sleeper group has launched attacks that have killed dozens of Iraqis and Syrians.

In Iraq, militants have successfully exploited a security gap in a northern stretch of territory amid ongoing disputes between Baghdad and Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region.
