Abu Dhabi, December 14: Sunil Narine was named captain of the Abu Dhabi Knights on Wednesday for the upcoming ILT20 inaugural competition in the UAE. Narin has been a part of Knight Riders since 2012 when he signed with Kolkata side of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“I am very happy to be the captain of the Abu Dhabi Knights Knights. It is a new challenge because now I have to think about the functioning of our whole team and not just focus on my game or my quarter. This I’m really looking forward to it,” he said in the franchise’s official release. ILT20 2023: The inaugural season of the International League T20 will begin on 13 January in Dubai.

Narine also represented the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). “I grew up on the Knight Riders and the Knight Riders grew on me, so it’s like a big family. There’s a team wherever they are and I love being a part of it.”

“I’ve played a lot of cricket in the UAE so I know what’s going on here pretty well. If you look at the ADKR team, it’s a familiar setup, not a brand new XI that I have to get used to. So that gave me a lot of confidence, Knowing the quality of my players,” he added.

Narine will be joined by other West Indies players including Andre Russell, Akeal Hosein, Raymon Reifer, Kennar Lewis and Ravi Rampaul. The Abu Dhabi franchise also has overseas players such as Jonny Bairstow, Seekuge Prasanna, Lahiru Kumara, Charith Asalanka, Paul Stirling, Ali Khan, Brandon Glover and Colin Ingram. ILT20 2022: Knight Riders sign star players Sunil Narine, Andre Russell and Jonny Bairstow for UAE International League T20.

Most recently, they signed Matiullah Khan, Fahad Nawaz, Sabir Ali and Zawar Farid as native UAE players. “There are also a lot of veterans on the team to whom I can feed back ideas and information. It’s going to be fun, it’s been a long journey with the Knight Knight family and I hope that never happens – end one,” Narine said.

Abu Dhabi Knights will open the inaugural ILT20 against Dubai Capitals on January 12, with the six-team league final scheduled for February 12 with 34 matches. This will clash with the start of South Africa’s SA20 league, the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia.
