UAE’s Khalifa Port 4 billion dirham expansion project launched

The expansion project of Khalifa Port, costing about AED4 billion, has officially started. The project, which involves the development of the Port’s South Terminal, Khalifa Port Logistics and Abu Dhabi Terminals, was recently inaugurated by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The port area expanded from 2.43 square kilometers to 8.63 square kilometers.

In addition, the quay wall at Khalifa Port has been extended from 2.3 km to 12.5 km. According to a press release from the Abu Dhabi (AD) Ports Group, the port currently has 21 berths and offers various customized services for strategic industries, making it a global deepwater port worth approximately AED 20.4 billion.

“The Khalifa Port expansion is a major national project and is considered to be an important addition to the UAE’s port and logistics services and will further enhance the UAE’s position in global trade,” he said president nahyan. “Khalifa Port and other national ports are important cornerstones for the development and diversification of the national economy.”

The Khalifa Port expansion project is expected to add to AD Ports Group’s target to increase general cargo throughput to 25 million tonnes by 2030 and increase Khalifa Port throughput to 15 million TEUs per annum ( TEU).

Developed from 4 kilometers of reclaimed land, the port opened in 2012 and is now a major hub serving more than 25 container lines with direct connections to over 70 international destinations. Ranked among the top five in the global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), Khalifa Port is home to the world’s three largest shipping operators – CSP COSCO, MSC and CMA CGM.
