Successful start-up of unit 2 of Baraka factory on the eve of UAE Women’s Day

The United Arab Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) announced today that its operations and maintenance subsidiary, Nawah Energy Corporation (Nawah), has successfully launched Barakah Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 (UAE) in the Al Dhafra region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

It’s especially sad that this milestone was delivered the day before UAE Women’s Day. UAE female nuclear reactor operators joined the crew who successfully started Unit 2, which reflects the leadership role of UAE female nationals in the country and peaceful nuclear energy. Plan and clean the power transition.

Female nuclear operators are highly qualified and certified and licensed nuclear operators in nuclear engineering. They joined more than 20% of the female workforce at the Barakah plant, which is one of the countries with the highest percentage of women in the nuclear energy industry in the world. Thanks to the efforts of HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairman of the “Mother of the UAE” General Women’s Union (GWU) and countless other UAE female pioneers, Emirati women today are at the forefront of many key sectors in the UAE, supporting economic diversification and sustainable development.

This milestone highlights the role of the Barakah plant as it continues to contribute to the success story of the UAE, which was achieved one year after the launch of Unit 1 and within five months of commercial operation of Unit 1. This highlights the significant progress being made to bring the four units of the Barakah plant online in a safe and timely manner to quickly decarbonize the UAE energy sector.

This important milestone marks the Barakah plant becoming the first multi-unit operating plant in the region, which will further promote the country’s economic growth with cleaner, more reliable and more adequate electricity. This achievement demonstrates the country’s ability to deliver a wide range of large-scale projects in the UAE plan, which complies with all national regulations and international standards, as well as the skills, qualifications and capabilities of the Barakah team led by the UAE.

His Excellency Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, CEO of ENEC, said: “We have reached another important milestone in delivering the UAE’s peaceful nuclear energy program today. This is our provision of clean and sufficient 24/7 electricity to the UAE. The Barakah plant supports the country’s sustainability Development and prosperity. With the launch of Module 2, we have now almost achieved our goal of meeting up to a quarter of our country’s electricity demand and achieving sustainable growth, while achieving the UAE’s climate change goals. We are the leader The role is proud that Emirati women have played a role in the continued progress of Barakah, and as the country begins to celebrate UAE Women’s Day, now is the timely time to launch Unit 2.

“With the support and guidance of the leadership of the UAE, Barakah has become a case study of the successful delivery of a nuclear program, and the plant has become a model for other countries considering nuclear energy as part of their energy mix. Among the ten most sustainable countries in the world Seven use nuclear energy, which is not only clean, but also improves the safety and reliability of the country’s energy,” he added.

The test is carried out under the continuous supervision of the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Agency (FANR), an independent nuclear regulatory agency in the UAE, and an operating license is performed after receiving the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) to complete the pre-launch review (PSUR) to ensure No. 2 The unit complies with international best practices in the nuclear energy industry.

Nawah, a joint venture nuclear operation and maintenance subsidiary of ENEC and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), has safely passed a comprehensive test plan before successfully completing the start-up of the second nuclear power reactor at the Barakah plant.

When commenting on this achievement of the UAE, Eng. Ali Al Hammadi, CEO of Nawah, said: “This is another important moment for the Barakah plant. We congratulate our talented team for completing the safe and successful start-up of Unit 2. As we work safely, preparations will now continue and Steadily achieve grid connection and finally start the commercial operation of the second unit of the Barakah plant. We are still committed to ensuring the operational excellence of nuclear power for all units. We thank our partners in the UAE and the world for their continued support to help us achieve these milestones and reach the highest Operating standards.”

The startup is the first time the device generates heat through nuclear fission. The heat is used to generate steam, which drives turbines to generate electricity. Based on the experience of unit 1 start-up, Nawah’s qualified and licensed nuclear operator team conducted multiple safety tests on the reactor’s process and power output.

In the next few months, Unit 2 will be connected to the National Grid, and nuclear operators will continue to gradually increase the power level, which is called Power Boost Test (PAT). The process will be continuously monitored and tested until the maximum power generation is reached, while complying with all regulatory requirements and the highest international safety, quality and assurance standards.

By providing sufficient clean electricity from the Baraka plant to hundreds of thousands of businesses and households, ENEC is leading the largest decarbonization effort in the region. The plant is also the largest single source of electricity in the UAE, through the commercially operated Barakah 1 unit.

After full production, the four units of the plant will generate 5.6 gigawatts of electricity, while preventing more than 21 million tons of carbon emissions each year. 7.3 billion smartphones.
