UAE’s COP28 will be ‘transparent, pragmatic’, foreign minister says

During the virtual meeting, Sheikh Abdullah praised Egypt’s progress at COP 27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, where Egypt united 197 countries and the EU around climate action and guided the COP process to build Leading role in new Loss and Damage Fund supporting the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries.

Sheikh Abdullah acknowledged the importance of holding two back-to-back COPs in the region and the important role the region must play in the global transition to sustainability and climate action. He underscored the UAE’s determination to steer the process forward and achieve meaningful progress at the UAE climate conference, COP28, by promoting inclusive dialogue, innovative solutions, and leveraging groundbreaking partnerships and building consensus among all parties.

Sheikh Abdullah said: “Following the success of Expo 2020 Dubai in bringing the world together, the UAE will leverage on its strong record as a trusted global convener to ensure that COP28 is inclusive, transparent and pragmatic. COP28 aims to transform and urgently accelerate climate action to deliver on the commitments the world has made.”

The UAE has embraced a climate-centric vision of the future, investing heavily in renewable energy and dynamic technologies centered on sustainable innovation. At the heart of these investments is a vision for a fully sustainable economy underpinned by effective regulatory oversight and contributions from all stakeholders.

As a historic trading nation at the center of the world, the UAE is best placed to support negotiations in fundamental focus areas such as energy, agriculture, investment and sustainable transport. With this philosophy at the heart of its vision, the UAE believes that collaboration will play the most critical role in ensuring that global decarbonization efforts are achieved.

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Special Envoy on Climate Change, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Vice-Chairman of the COP28 UAE High Committee, said that the UAE will work with the UNFCCC Secretariat to shape the COP28 agenda. Building on the outcomes of COP27, the UAE and the UNFCCC will work with Parties and partners to accelerate climate action to meet the commitments made by the world.

The COP28 UAE High Committee includes ministers and government officials to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach.

The High Council brings together voices from all walks of life at all levels to prepare for COP28 in the UAE.

The members of the high committee include Mohammed Hadi Al-Husseini, Minister of State for Finance; Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemi, Minister of State for International Cooperation; Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure; Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment ; Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade; Shamma bint Suhail Faris Al Mazrui, Minister of State for Youth Affairs; Muhammad Abdullah Al Junaibi, Chairman of the Federal Agreements and Strategic Narrative Authority; Lieutenant General Mali.

Members also include Lieutenant General Talal Humaid Belhoul Al Farasi, Director of National Security at Dubai Police; Major General Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police; Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board; Rashid Saeed Al Ameri, Deputy Minister of the Government Coordination Department, Presidential Court; Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, Deputy Minister of the Interior; Helal Saeed Almarri, Director-General, Department of Economy and Tourism, Dubai; Saif Saeed Ghobash, Secretary-General, Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Dr Jamal Mohammed Al Hosani representing the Supreme National Security Council.
