The Super Bowl Halftime Show is a ridiculously overblown event, but you can’t deny that it’s always exciting.

Before each game, the DJ tried to hype the audience, with little success. They apparently got a pretty strict tracklist, as they only played songs from the soundtrack along with a few others, including John Newman’s Love Me Again.
The Black Eyed Peas’ 2009 hit “I Gotta Feeling” was played over speakers minutes before kickoff, when the stadium lights were cut and the announcer encouraged everyone to turn off the lights on their phones. They then put on a dizzying light show that probably should have come with a health warning.
Volunteers also rolled out a giant inflatable World Cup trophy at each match, which was combined with pyrotechnic effects. It’s a clever sequence, but loses its charm after the fifth time you see it.
Crazy stuntmen showed up at halftime in both semi-finals. He is best known as a member of the hip-hop group Reel 2 Real and sang their track I Like to Move It, which was released in 1994. The problem is that an entire generation is only familiar with the song because it was remixed by a group of lemurs from the family movie series Madagascar, which means it’s hard to take seriously.
The crazy stuntman wasn’t the only FIFA artist in the 1990s calling for a World Cup revival. Chesney Hawkes topped the UK charts in 1991 with a song called The One and Only, but has not released an album since 2012, U.K. with Wales.

Boyzlife, the project of former Boyzone member Keith Duffy and former Westlife star Brian McFadden, has also appeared a few times.

The most bizarre performance at the competition belonged to Julian Marley, the son of reggae icon Bob Marley. Julian sang “Get Up, Stand Up,” written by his father in response to political turmoil in the Caribbean, during Argentina’s quarter-final match against the U.S. NetherlandsThe song contains the lyrics “stand up, stand up, stand up for your rights,” but it’s not a touching tribute, but a cruel joke about the farmers who lost their lives helping to run the race work.

Even the FIFA Legends Cup featuring Alessandro Del Piero, Kaka, Roberto Carlos and Javier Zanetti had a ceremony ahead of the final, with a team Dance troupe and a military band.
There is no clear strategy for music and entertainment at this year’s World Cup. No one is suggesting it becomes as ludicrously extravagant as the Super Bowl, but with a little more effort, it could have been a bigger cultural celebration, which should be what this game is all about.
