Abu Dhabi, UAE: TAKUMI NEXT: The Essence of Japan, a global showcase of Japanese skills and craftsmanship, has arrived in Abu Dhabi. Initiated by JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) and METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), the project opened a pop-up store at Ocha Cafe Sakura at The Galleria Mall in Abu Dhabi until February 28, 2023.
The project introduces a new generation of Japanese artisans who use their rich cultural heritage and deep traditional technical background to efficiently and sustainably use local resources to produce high-quality, artistic handicrafts that meet the needs of the modern world. Japanese spirit.
“JETRO has been at the forefront of supporting the global expansion of Japanese SMEs, and Abu Dhabi was a natural choice for us to launch Takumi Next in the Middle East, as it has quietly positioned itself as the Middle East’s arts and cultural hub for many years,” said JETRO Dubai Operations Development Director Takahisa Ota said.
“This edition features 10 curated products spanning Japan’s most revered handicrafts: from paper, ceramics, fabrics to high-grade metal and glass manufacturing and more. With this selection, we hope to showcase the essence of traditional Japanese craftsmanship vision for the future,” he added.
“The word ‘Takumi’ means ‘artisan’ or ‘craftsman’ in Japanese. As social norms and lifestyles evolve, we contemplate the future of traditional crafts and the existential role of artisans through a selection of everyday objects. Through the lens, you can get a glimpse into the inner workings of a country, Japan’s history and the industries that drive its economy,” added Momoka Shibata, Digital Marketing Analyst at JETRO.
Originally launched in 2019, Takumi Next has helped over 500 artists reach global markets through pop-up stores and online sales and marketing platforms since its launch. To this end, JETRO has established an online system through which handicraft producers can reach out to buyers and seek expert advice in order to explore overseas markets.
This release features cutting-edge technology provided by AWL, Inc., which includes special AI monitoring tools that will capture visitor interest and provide artisans with deep insights into buyer behavior, making demand forecasting more accurate and reliable.
Products on display, which will be for sale, include elegant handcrafted coffee pots in heat-resistant borosilicate glass individually hand-blown by glass masters. Another highlight product is the Tokoname teapot, by Shun En, a well-known artist with unique hollow carving techniques, recognized as the number one in Japan (the tea brewed with them is said to have a stronger, sweeter and milder taste) Exquisite clay filter filter ensures that the pure flavor of the tea will not be compromised by using a metal filter).
