Officials warn public not to believe fabricated stories aimed at gaining sympathy and donating money to beggars
From November 6 to December 12 this year, Abu Dhabi police arrested 159 beggars in the emirate.
Beggars make up stories to gain public sympathy, an official said, warning people not to believe the misleading tales often posted on shop windows or mosque doors.
The police emphasized that activities to arrest begging are being carried out, and called on the public to cooperate with the police to do their part to reduce street begging. This can be done by avoiding distributing handouts in person and turning to official channels, institutions and charities to ensure donations reach the right people.
Police are also urging members of the public to call 999 to report cases of begging through the command and control centre.
