Science-led biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and Abu Dhabi-based artificial intelligence healthcare company G42 Healthcare have signed a strategic partnership agreement to locally manufacture innovative medicines in Abu Dhabi.

The agreement focuses on cooperation in four key areas, including localizing innovative industries on a global scale, R&D, innovation and sustainable development.

The agreement is in line with the National Industrial and Advanced Technology Strategy and the ‘Make it in the Emirates’ initiative launched by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology to enhance the UAE’s business environment and status as an attractive destination locally and globally industrial investors.

It also supports the growth and competitiveness of national industries, the innovation and adoption of advanced technologies, and the UAE’s position as a global hub for future industries.

The agreement was signed between Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Hamed, Chairman of the Ministry of Health; Pascal Soriot, Executive Director and CEO of AstraZeneca; Dr. Jamal Mohammed Al Kaabi, Deputy Minister of Health; Signed in the presence of G42 Healthcare CEO Ashish Koshy and AstraZeneca Regional Vice President Middle East and Africa Pelin Incesu signed a binding agreement confirming the partnership.

The agreement contributes to the ongoing efforts to build a competitive knowledge-based economy by unlocking the potential of the UAE’s national capabilities.

Based on international best practice, the partnership aims to develop sustainable solutions for healthcare transformation while achieving a balance between economic growth and sustainability.

The agreement is in line with the objectives of the “Make it in the Emirates” campaign, and the advantages and incentives that the UAE offers to the industrial sector, including a supportive legislative framework, flexible financing solutions, world-class infrastructure and a well-developed transport network.

These incentives are aimed at creating investment opportunities, strengthening national and international investor partnerships, increasing efficiency, improving product quality and its global competitiveness.

The agreement reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a hub for life sciences research and innovation and is part of a series of long-term partnerships with key players in industry, including pharmaceuticals, as the UAE embarks on an ambitious journey over the next 50 years The latest achievements in the industry.

By overseeing similar strategic partnership agreements, the Ministry of Health seeks to play a key role in the UAE’s knowledge economy by creating unique jobs that require highly skilled workers and human capital.

Abu Dhabi is also poised to develop one of the largest pharmaceutical storage facilities. Due to be operational soon, the state-of-the-art facility will contribute to the emirate’s life sciences efforts, providing a world-class end-to-end temperature-controlled solution for the transportation of pharmaceuticals.

Commenting on the occasion, Dr Jamal Mohammed Al Kaabi, Undersecretary of Health of Abu Dhabi said: “Ensuring quality medical care for patients…”
