Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reiterated the UAE’s strong condemnation of the Taliban’s recent decision to ban Afghan women and girls from higher education. The decision is the latest example of restrictions imposed on Afghan women and girls since August 2021 in an effort to erase them from public life.

The decision seriously jeopardizes international efforts to engage the Taliban on behalf of the Afghan people.

The UAE reiterated that this decision, along with an earlier ban on girls’ access to secondary education, violates fundamental human rights and is contrary to the teachings of Islam, and must be swiftly reversed.

The UAE will work with regional and international partners in its unwavering long-term support and commitment to the sovereignty, stability, security and prosperity of Afghanistan.
