Kit Harington has revealed that social media has been “the most dangerous thing” since he shot to fame on Game of Thrones.
The actor landed the role of Jon Snow on HBO’s hit fantasy series in his early 20s.
During the official Game of Thrones podcast recorded at the Game of Thrones fan convention earlier this month, the 35-year-old said: “I’ll be online, I’ll watch stuff, I’ll be in the comments, I’ll Check out the comments section, that doom box.
“It screwed me up. Really screwed me up, really hit my confidence for a long time. I had to learn not to look at that stuff.
“And then that extended into my actual decision-making about social media. I was like, I don’t know what that gives me. I know what it takes, but I don’t know what it brings.
“I think everyone has an opinion and some people might find a lot of great stuff on social media, but I think that’s the most dangerous thing for an actor on a show like this.
“So I had to not do that. I wasn’t on social media, I had to stay away from that stuff.”
Game of Thrones characters include Jon Snow, the bastard son of House Stark, who joins the Night’s Watch to defend the human kingdom from the sinister White Walkers.
Harington was nominated twice for an Emmy for his portrayal of the character and stars alongside his wife Rose Leslie, who plays his Savage lover Ygritte in the series.
He also reflects on the “stratospheric lift” he’s gotten after taking on the role of the eight-season fantasy epic at such a young age.
“I don’t think any actor has a perfect or ideal career trajectory,” he said.
“Through Game of Thrones, I had a real upliftment to the world. I left drama school, went into a play, and then I was in Game of Thrones, and Game of Thrones took off.
“So I was 21 when it all started. You think you’re grown up at 21 and you’re not, and I think being in that state is a shock to the system.
“But surprisingly, what better way to spend your 20s than on a show like this.
“I take it to mean that you’re looking for that kind of thing your entire career as an actor.
“A thing becomes important, or you’re famous for it. If you had it in your 20s, you’d be ‘bad’. Now what? What do I do now?’”
Harington is reportedly set to star in the Game of Thrones spinoff, which will follow Jon Snow exclusively.
Earlier this year, Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin confirmed that a spinoff series involving Harrington was in the works, but said: “I can’t tell you much until HBO gives me the green light. .”
