Driverless cars are no longer a dream. It has become a reality. Now it’s coming to Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island will introduce autonomous (driverless) Rapid Transit (ART) as part of the expansion of the Yas Island and Saadiyat Island Smart Transport projects. The announcement was made by the Integrated Transportation Center (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transportation (DMT) on Friday.
Driverless Rapid Transit in Abu Dhabi
Three driverless rapid transit systems will be implemented, the announcement said. These are modified rapid transit systems that operate without the need for mass transit train systems or railroads.The first phase of these transits will serve all major commercial centers and tourist attractions Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
The second phase of the Smart Mobility project will be carried out on Yas Island and Saadiyat Island. The Smart Mobility project is jointly carried out by DMT, ITC and Bayanat. It was officially inaugurated during the 2022 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

TXAI autonomous taxi
Currently, a fleet of 17 vehicles is part of the Intelligent Transport System on Yas and Saadiyat Islands. Of these, 8 are TXAI car, which is the first fully automated taxi in the UAE. Al Manarat, The St. Regis Hotel, Theodore Monod French International High School, Saadiyat Beach Residences, Mamsha Saadiyat and Saadiyat Beach are some of the new stations.
The service runs 7 days a week from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on a route of 47.5 km. To plan and track their trips, users can download and install the TXAI application. The project includes 6 Mini Robo Buses, and 15 new charging stations. Yass and the Saadiyat Islands Network.
