Watch: After escaping from Kabul, woman burst into tears as she reunited with her family in France-News

When Shakiba Dawod was reunited with her mother on Friday, all the pressure and fear of trying to get her family to leave Afghanistan disappeared, she collapsed and cried.

Standing outside a reception center near Paris, Davod, who has lived in France for 12 years, embraced her 56-year-old mother Cadilla. She took another daughter and three sons to Kabul on a rescue flight. The two women sobbed, stroking their faces and hair.

A shopping bag containing groceries that Davod brought to his family was forgotten on a nearby sidewalk.

“There are a lot of emotions today,” Davod, 36, told Reuters a few minutes after the meeting. “The moment I saw my mother running towards me, all my fears disappeared.”

Davod said that due to pressure from the new Taliban leadership, her family felt they had to flee Afghanistan. She said a brother had served in the Afghan army and was killed by the Taliban in 2019.

The family said they tried day and night to escape the crowds and prevent military checkpoints from entering the airport, but they were unsuccessful.

Finally, after returning to Davod, France, to help them contact the French contingent at the airport, they did so. They were evacuated from Kabul on a French plane. When they arrived on Tuesday, they were sent to a reception center on the outskirts of Paris for isolation as a precaution against Covid-19.

“I don’t know how we got here. It’s like a dream,” said one of the brothers, Mahdi, 34.

On Thursday, Davod brought them bags of supplies, but they were refused by the police guarding the entrance. On Friday, when restrictions were relaxed, they were finally allowed to leave the reception center briefly.

“In Afghanistan, everything collapsed, their hopes and dreams collapsed,” Davod said after being reunited with his family. “I hope I can help them regain their dreams and rebuild their lives.”
