Blizzard conditions continued to prevail in parts of the northeastern United States as stubborn remnants of days of massive extreme weather swept across the country, causing widespread power outages in nine states, travel delays and at least 47 deaths.
The weekend storm wreaked havoc on travel across the United States, with thousands of flights canceled and passengers stranded. The perfect storm of violent snowstorms, howling winds and sub-zero temperatures has forced the cancellation of more than 15,000 U.S. flights in recent days, including at least 2,600 on Monday, according to the tracking website Flightaware.com.
The blizzard, considered the worst in 45 years in the Buffalo area, developed late Friday and hit Western New York over the Christmas holiday weekend. It covers an arctic ice and winter storm front that has stretched across much of the United States for days, as far south as the Mexican border.
The Greater Buffalo area, on the edge of Lake Erie near the Canadian border, was among the hardest hit areas, with nearly 50 inches (127 centimeters) of snow falling at Buffalo Airport as of Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
