Ramallah, Jan. 2 (AP) Palestinians say Israeli forces killed a Palestinian militant in clashes that broke out early Monday as troops entered a Palestinian town in the occupied West Bank and a civilian.
Samer Houshiyeh, 21, was shot several times in the chest and civilian Fouad Abed was also killed, said Samer Attiyeh, director of the Ibn Sina hospital in Jenin.
Hospital officials said Abed was 17, but the Palestinian health ministry said in a later statement that Abed was 25.
In a statement, the Al-Aqsa Brigade, a militant group linked to President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party, said Houshiyeh was a member of the group.
The brigade released an earlier photo of Hou Shiye posing with a rifle.
Videos on social media showed his body wrapped in the militant group’s flag as his mother said goodbye to other mourners.
Clashes erupted in Kafr Dan near the northern city of Jenin.
The Israeli military said they entered the town late Sunday to demolish the homes of two Palestinian gunmen who killed an Israeli soldier in a shootout in September.
2022 is the deadliest year for the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 2006. Israeli forces carried out raids on Palestinian towns on an almost daily basis, killing more than 150 Palestinians.
The Israeli army says most of the Palestinians killed were militants. But stone-throwing youths protesting the invasion and others not involved in the confrontation were also killed.
Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war, as well as East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, territories sought by Palestinians to build a future state. (Associated Press)
